The House Democratic Caucus will meet on Tuesday afternoon to elect leadership for the upcoming 147th General Assembly session that starts January 8.
It’s standard practice for each of the four legislative caucuses to hold a biannual meeting after each general election to choose leaders for the upcoming session.
After the November 6 election, Democrats gained one seat and now hold a 27-14 majority in the House of Representatives.
The caucus will select a speaker, majority leader and majority whip. The speaker then must be elected by the entire House. With the retirement of former House Speaker Robert F. Gilligan, the chamber will have a new speaker when the session begins in January. The Democratic caucus also will discuss the committee process and submit committee requests for the upcoming session.
