Two weeks after Hurricane Sandy, parts of Assateague Island remain closed.
Hurricane Sandy hit Assateague Island pretty hard. The popular pedestrian and biking bridge, next to the Verazzano Bridge, was severly damaged. Rochell Daigneault, who is chief of education at Assateague, said the State Highway Administration will make repairs. She didn’t know when the bridge would open again.
The beach and visitors’ center are open.
Most camping areas and trails remain closed. Renault said parts of the boardwalk on the trails floated away during flooding.
There won’t be any muzzle-loader deer hunting at Assateague this year.
Waterfowl season starts Saturday, but fewer blinds are available.
