Former U.S. Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania died at his home in Philadelphia Sunday morning. He was 82, and had been suffering complications from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Specter was first elected to the Senate in 1980, and served five terms. In 2005, during his last term, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s disease. In 2009, he became a Democrat after saying that he found himself more “at odds with the Republican philosophy.” He was defeated in the Democrat primary in 2010.
